Vegan diet and what's at stake

But he was the first pro-football superstar to try.

There's no evidence a vegan diet can improve an athlete's performance, says David Nieman, a professor of health and exercise at Appalachian State University. His 1988 study of vegetarian runners found they ran as well as their meat-eating rivals but no better. Although the vegetarian athletes in his study also ate eggs and dairy foods, he says, "there is scientific evidence that veganism, when done right, won't hurt performance." But, he adds, there is only anecdotal evidence that it can help.

Professional athletes, especially NFL players, need thousands of calories a day. Many enjoy a high-protein, high-fat smorgasbord of steaks, chops, burgers, pizza, ice cream and beer. Gonzalez's tight-end job requires him to push around monstrously sized opponents.

New nanotechnology fabrication techniques

A recent American Chemical Society's Weekly PressPac briefly describes an important advance toward industrial-scale production of nanodevices (scroll down to item #4). With this new technique, 'zinc oxide nanowires are grown in the exact positions where nanodevices later will be fabricated, in a way that involves a minimum number of fabrication steps and is suitable for industrial-scale applications.' In fact, this technique only needs only three photolithographic steps. It could soon be used for mass fabrication of nanowire-based transistors and sensors.

You can see on the left a schematic of the photolithography process used for this new scalable fabrication of nanowire devices. "(a) Gold pads and fiducial marks are deposited on the surface. (b) Nanowires (NWs) are grown selectively from the two sides of the gold pads.

Franciscan Skemp pairs with Altra for new Holmen clinic

Franciscan Skemp Healthcare plans to build a new and bigger clinic in Holmen, Wis., in a partnership with Altra Federal Credit Union. The two corporations announced an agreement Wednesday to purchase land at Holmen Drive and Hale Road in Holmen, just north of the Pizza Corral restaurant. Once the purchase is complete, the property will be subdivided, with plans calling for building separate facilities with a common access road.
Pending internal approvals, Franciscan Skemp Healthcare will relocate its existing clinic behind Holmen Square to the new site, expanding from 7,500 square feet to 20,000 square feet. Altra Federal Credit Union will build a 5,000-square foot facility south of the clinic."We both were interested in purchasing land in Holmen, and the seller didn't want to sell off small parcels, so going together we bought a large parcel," said Jerry Forsythe, president and CEO of Altra.

Register-News Halloween story contest winners

The pain in his head seemed familiar, but nothing else was recognizable as Garrett slowly opened his eyes. Around him, as black turned to gray and eventually an array of colors, were a twin mattress on the floor, wrinkled sheets and a book.He leaned forward on the cement floor and settled onto the mattress, taking in the sight of a room obviously decorated in the 1970s: Pink walls, a yellow ceiling and cold, gray floor. There, he sees, is a window, though it is boarded up completely from the outside. The lavender curtain appears unkempt for at least 20 years. Across the room, some eight feet away, he sees a sink and mirror, but no medicine cabinet. Fear enters the room."Am I in jail?"He stands and gathers himself, shaking loose the various nerves that bit him as though his entire body had been asleep for decades.

Paulette Burke - Commended for caring

Paulette Burke spent her earliest years growing with grandmother, farmer Casilda Stewart, of whom she says, "I learned from her to learn to appreciate people for who they are. It is not the things that you give. It's the way how you give it, and after giving, the love that you show."

Now a grandmother herself and far from wealthy, Burke was recently given a merit award by the National Council for the Aged for her selfless work with seniors living in Beechwood/Greenwich Park and Lyndhurst areas of Kingston.

In the last week, she was also chosen by the National Council for the Aged as the top candidate for the International Volunteers Award.

Exceptional work

She helps them to keep healthy and young.
