Super Bowl sparks some super advertising blogs

And fascination about the commercials has fostered a virtual cottage industry of Web sites that cater to news, leaks and discussion about their content. Super Bowl ad compilations, blogs, even clever parodies, reside in various places online, such as sports.aol.com/nfl/superbowlads and spike.com/superbowl.

Political coverage is making a comeback

One of the most disturbing media trends of the past two decades has been the continuous cutback in TV coverage of presidential politics.

Nowhere was this more apparent during the last two election cycles than in the networks' dearth of national convention coverage. The reason most often given by news executives: lack of viewer interest.

But this year, news outlets on the Internet and long-established cable TV channels have greatly expanded the amount of coverage, and viewers are responding in record numbers. And that, analysts say, is good news for the media and citizens.

Acne Drug Accutane Ups Cholesterol

In a study involving almost 14,000, mostly young patients taking the drug, elevations in blood cholesterol, triglycerides (a blood fat), and a blood liver function test were more common than have been previously reported.

Blood levels returned to normal or to pretreatment levels in the vast majority of patients in the months after they stopped taking Accutane, however.

Researchers say this finding is reassuring, but they add that patients should be followed longer to see if there are long-term implications for cardiovascular and liver disease risk.

"We do want to know if there are long-term consequences, but that was not a part of this research," researcher Michele Manos, PhD, MPH, tells WebMD.

Tighter Controls on Drug

First approved in 1982 for the treatment of severe disfiguring acne , Accutane use in women has long been linked to an increased risk of miscarriage and birth defects.

Outcomes in Athletes with Marked ECG Repolarization Abnormalities

Background Young, trained athletes may have abnormal 12-lead electrocardiograms (ECGs) without evidence of structural cardiac disease. Whether such ECG patterns represent the initial expression of underlying cardiac disease with potential long-term adverse consequences remains unresolved. We assessed long-term clinical outcomes in athletes with ECGs characterized by marked repolarization abnormalities.

Methods From a database of 12,550 trained athletes, we identified 81 with diffusely distributed and deeply inverted T waves (2 mm in at least three leads) who had no apparent cardiac disease and who had undergone serial clinical, ECG, and echocardiographic studies for a mean (±SD) of 9±7 years (range, 1 to 27). Comparisons were made with 229 matched control athletes with normal ECGs from the same database.

Pair of Pike County clinics join Quincy Medical Group

The Pike County Family Practice and Winchester Family Practice will become branch clinics of Quincy Medical Group Feb. 1.

Both clinics will continue in their present locations, and Dr. Ronald Johnson, Dr. Warren Barrow and physician assistant Danita Ray will continue to see patients at those locations.

"We welcome Dr. Johnson and his colleagues to Quincy Medical Group, and we look forward to continue delivering quality health-care services in Pittsfield and the surrounding communities in Pike County," said Aric Sharp, QMG's chief executive officer.

"Dr. Johnson, Dr. Barrow and Ms. Ray are respected by our QMG providers and have served Pike County for many years, and we believe the partnership will help provide that same level of service and added technology to the region for the future," Sharp said.

Monday wild card

You need a Huckleberry pie slapped up side your head ...

Howard Martinson (re: GoZZZer Ranch boat flap): The gent who told me they were going to pump the gas into the Lake was wearing a GoZZZer Ranch golf shirt, and from all appearances was one of the crew members on the boat.

DFO: This morning's Huckleberry tells of another GoZZZer chimpanzee cutting off a car as he made an illegal turn from Fourth onto I-90. And this afternoon, I learned that a woman in a GoZZZer suburban double-parked on Sherman, fuhcryinoutloud, to drop off a brood of kids at Rogers Ice Cream. Seems she didn't have the time to pull around the corner and park. I'll let you decide who to believe. Me? I'm putting my money down on Howard, all the way. (BTW, you can read GoZZZer Ranch propaganda about the project, which was named after homesteader John Gozzer here, about company HQ in the old Blackwell House here, and about its Arrow Point impact here.)
