Isiah Finally Coaching to Win

The next three times he used eight men came after the suspensions were handed down following the fight with Denver.

After losing to Cleveland last Friday, Thomas responded to a question about Stephon Marbury being benched in the third quarter by saying, "This is the year where the best people play."

Now there's an original idea: play the best players. I'll bet that every coach will soon adopt a similar philosophy.

The main reason why Thomas is cutting his rotation is because he is in a win-now mode. He is doing what he should have done last season; he's not worrying about making Isiah Thomas the team president look bad. He's making sure that Isiah Thomas the head coach has the best chance to win games.

For example, last year Thomas the GM needed to validate drafting Renaldo Balkman in the first round and the rookie was one of 11 players that saw the court on opening night in Memphis.

We learned later that Landry had been paralyzed from the neck down. The rest of the season was a downward spiral of the disinterested play of a team that had lost its heart. * * * Some dreams are broken before they are born. Such was the case of Jimmy Rollins. Jimmy was a friend of mine in the Childrens Home. Jimmy hated football and basketball because we never let him play in our pick-up games. He complained and cried and moaned and whined but we never allowed him to play. Not once. We werent being cruel; we were being careful. Jimmy wore a metal brace on his right leg. It started at his knee and was connected to springs and a metal pad under his big orthopedic boot. His right leg was, in essence, a pogo stick. That leg was about 4 inches shorter than his left leg. We assumed Jimmy knew how far to push his appliance.

Stop Chasing High-Tech Cheaters

Opening up The New York Times last week, I stumbled across an article that outraged me. "Colleges Chase as Cheats Shift to Higher Tech" detailed the struggle of some academics against new, high-tech forms of "cheating" that are based in Internet use, iPods, cellphones, and PocketPCs. The tone of the article was one of dismay at the collapse of morality in education. As I watched the article climb the "most e-mailed list" on the Times Web site through the day, my outrage increased.

My bipolar disorder is making me obese

Your diet sounds positive; however, a dietician will be able to work with you to agree on long-term dietary and lifestyle changes. It's OK to enjoy carbohydrates, as they're our bodies' preferred fuel and are associated with better mood and feeling energetic. I'd recommend a portion of starchy carbs (potatoes, bread, rice, cereals, etc - for details, go to eatwell.gov.uk), including high-fibre varieties, that cover one-third of a plate at each meal. They aren't fattening unless fat (eg butter) or sugar (eg jam) is added or the portion is too large. Aim to eat a balanced and varied diet - deficiencies in vitamins B1, B2, folate and vitamin C, iron, zinc and selenium have all been associated with low mood.

Bipolar disorders (once known as manic depression) are quite common, severely affecting 1.5 per cent of the population and, less severely, 4.5 per cent.
