| Sooners struggle on the road
And the wins haven't been all that impressive — Baylor, TCU and NCAA Division II Chaminade. But Capel's second edition Sooners are showing signs of growth, with wins over fringe top-25 teams Arkansas (in Norman) and Gonzaga (in Oklahoma City) the last two weeks. The next step in the Sooners' progression is to beat a quality opponent on the road. And today presents such an opportunity, when they face No. 23 West Virginia at 5 p.m. in the Charleston Civic Center. Sure, this could be considered a neutral-site game, since it's being played two-and-a-half hours from the Mountaineers' Morgantown campus. "But it's not," Capel said. "It's a home game for them. It's sold out and they really get behind their program in that state." This could serve as preparation for Big 12 Conference play, which awaits in two weeks with road tests at Kansas, Texas and Texas A&M, as well as upstarts Baylor and Nebraska.
At the Harvard School of Dental Medicine, One Professor’s Flouride ...
It was the first time that Dr. Chester Douglass, the Department Chair of Epidemiology at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine, had spoken publicly about the controversy surrounding his research on the connection between fluoride and bone cancer. Fox 25 news cameras followed him to his car on a cold day in February 2006. “Is there a cover-up here?" asked Fox 25 investigative reporter Mike Beaudet. “This report, from Harvard Medical School, will answer that question," Douglass responded, brandishing an envelope which ostensibly contained a draft of the report of the investigation that the Medical School had launched in June 2005. Over a year later, that report has yet to be released to the public, though Harvard has publicly exonerated Douglass.
Jury-rigged, jerry-built: Maybe a problem?
The word had popped up the week before in The New York Times Magazine article, "The Sleep-Industrial Complex," all about the mattress and pharmaceutical industries. The piece included a reference to a man who was such an enthusiast for Sleep Number Beds that he "jury-rigged something similar for his bulldog." On the subject of exactly how the dog expressed its preference for a particular Sleep Number, the author was silent. Jury-rigging is a term with nautical origins. "Rig" is one of those little words so short that it contains nearly infinite meanings (an early form of nanotechnology). One of its meanings is "the arrangement of masts, sails, etc., on a vessel." In the days of the tall ships, when a vessel on the high seas lost a mast in a storm or a battle, the ship's carpenter would fashion what was known as a jury mast from spare parts down in the hold.

BLOOMINGTON — Wrestlers moving up a weight class so a teammate can take their spot may earn a few extra points for their squad.“We picked up a lot of extra points doing that," said Bloomington High School coach Mark Gardner after his squad won the Big 12 Conference Tournament at the Robert Frank Sports Complex Saturday. The Purple Raiders scored 231 points to deprive Champaign Central (225.5) of its first title since 1967. The 5½-point gap was the smallest since BHS edged Normal Community by two for the 1995 title.BHS won for the 10th time in 11 years by winning eight of 11 bouts in the final round compared to four of 11 for Central, which had a 30-point lead at one time.“Some of the kids went to weight classes where they may not have had their strongest individual performance, being up or down a weight," Gardner said.
Minimally invasive treatment for shoulder arthritis
Shoulder arthritis can significantly affect our lives. Routine activities -- activities we normally take for granted such as reaching and lifting can become limited because of pain. Essentially, all arm motion uses the shoulder to a certain degree. Recreational activities such as throwing or racquet sports place increase demands on the shoulder. Even a mild degree of arthritis can cause significant pain and disability when performing normal as well as recreational activities. The two most common shoulder disorders are shoulder arthritis and rotator cuff disease. The source of pain from shoulder arthritis originates from the loss of the "shock absorber" (cartilage) between the ball (humeral head) and the socket (glenoid). Therefore, arthritic pain develops as the bones of the shoulder joint come into contact during shoulder motion.

Training Medical Warriors: Tropical Medicine Specialists Who Ward Off ...
NORTHBROOK, Ill., Nov. 5 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- In 1963, when Karl Johnson, M.D., chose to set up a laboratory in Bolivia for the National Institutes of Health instead of taking a job working on a vaccine for the common cold, little did he know that his research would lay the foundation for the containment of numerous deadly infectious diseases around the world. With just a quick built laboratory, a few microscopes, mosquito nets and syringes, Dr. Johnson and his colleagues were able to identify Machupo virus, a hemorrhagic fever that had reached epidemic proportions in the South American country. More than 30 years later, that break through, along with groundbreaking research on several other viruses, continues to aid scientists to identify and contain life-threatening diseases such as Ebola and Sin Nombre, which have both reached American soil, but thanks to the pioneering research of Dr.
