Report: Detective in Fox case linked to other lawsuits, accusations

The Chicago Tribune reports today that Hayes was also a central figure in three other major cases that went awry.

It also says Hayes was fired as an Alsip police officer in the '80s for allegedly hitting two handcuffed men with a baton.

But a Will County Sheriff's spokesman defended Hayes, saying that assertive detectives are often the focus of criticism.

U.S. helium supply is deflating

ST. LOUIS - Listen up, prank callers and party clowns.

The nation's supply of helium - the gas that has given rise to millions of party balloons and Donald Duck voices - is dwindling. In fact, the managers of the nation's lone helium reserve, in Texas, expect it to be depleted within 10 years.

"It's a bad pun, and I've used it before, but the nation's demand for helium has just ballooned in recent years," said Hans Stuart, a spokesman for the New Mexico Bureau of Land Management, which oversees the federal helium reserve near Amarillo.

Medicine, industry and science depend heavily on helium. It plays a significant role in nuclear magnetic resonance, welding, fiber optics and computer microchip production. NASA uses large amounts annually to pressurize space shuttle fuel tanks.

SC Faithful Still Seeking GOP Candidate

COLUMBIA, S.C. — The faithful in South Carolina are still looking for the Republican presidential candidate who is the answer to their prayers.

Churchgoers on Sunday at the Redemption World Outreach Center in Greenville to those who attended services at the First Baptist Church in Columbia gave high marks to the four GOP candidates who have spent the most time in the state _ Sen. John McCain of Arizona, Mitt Romney, Mike Huckabee and Fred Thompson.

Huckabee, an ordained Baptist minister, would seem like a lock for South Carolina's religious voters. The former Arkansas governor, who talks openly about his faith and its tenets, won the Iowa caucuses based on strong support from evangelicals _ eight of 10 who described themselves as evangelical Christians backed Huckabee, according to an Associated Press entrance poll in Iowa.

CD Reviews

Now, reissued with a new DVD of recent concert footage and promotional videos, you can watch and listen to what the man says on the deluxe version of Memory Almost Full.On his previous album, Chaos And Creation In The Backyard, McCartney exhibited a renewed concentration on his craft, the result of a disciplined approach to songwriting, performance, and production. On Memory Almost Full, he preserves much the same focus, yet his performances yield a bit more spontaneity and spunk. Tracks like "Only Mama Knows" and "Nod Your Head" rock and rumble with a youthful exuberance. "Dance Tonight" jangles to a catchy mandolin riff and foot-stomping beat. "That Was Me" bustles along to a playful melody. These are but a few examples why this effort not only stands as a solid McCartney album, but also as one of the year’s best. The DVD included in this deluxe version does have its merits, but most of the material will appeal primarily to McCartney completists.
