The man who directed 'Bonnie and Clyde'

The response to the film's then-unique blend of violence and comedy, sex and iconoclasm would be what we now know as the New Hollywood.

Penn will be at the Harvard Film Archive this Friday, kicking off a four-day retrospective of his work. Sitting in the art-filled Upper West Side duplex he shares with his wife, he recently talked about his life and work. Despite a recent hospitalization for pneumonia, Penn was an animated and articulate conversationalist.

"What happens is, you reach 85, and everybody says, 'Get him before he dies!,' " Penn laughs. "You like being celebrated, but you also know the clock is ticking."

A trim, energetic man of medium height with a hang-dog face and striking light-blue eyes, Penn's casually dressed: sweater, chinos, a pair of Nikes.

Rivers bent on quick recovery

"I'm looking at it like in late July I'd be wishing I had these 2½ weeks back," the Chargers quarterback said yesterday, about 24 hours after undergoing surgery to replace the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee.

In the procedure performed by Chargers team physician David Chao, Rivers had the patella tendon in his right knee removed and then attached in place of his ACL.

Rivers said he should be walking by the end of the week.

His rehabilitation is expected to take six months, but he and others in the organization have expressed optimism it can be quicker.

"That's the latter end of it," Rivers said. "I'm going to be ready for training camp. I'm not going to do anything miraculous. But I'm going to get after it, and I like to think I'm a fast healer."

Because his wife is expecting their fourth child, Rivers had anticipated waiting until the second week of February to have surgery.

Mandella and Harty have some real talent

Lewis or the Feb. 10 San Vicente at seven furlongs.

Mandella is keen on both horses. He said the CashCall showed that the lightly raced Into Mischief "likes to compete."

"In his second start (a second in the Hollywood Prevue), he got off a little bad, and we tried to just sit and be patient with him," Mandella said. "But he almost seemed confused by it. So I suggested that Victor (Espinoza) let him run out of the gate and then take hold of him, so he at least kind of understood what we were trying to do. He ran like he did in his first race, where Victor just waited at the quarter pole with those horses, then it looked like he broke out the gate again.

"… After seeing that, I think all options are open. You couldn't expect one to do much more in three races than he's done."

Mandella, whose best finish with six previous starters was fifth in 1994, hasn't completely ruled out Dixie Chatter making the Derby.

The National Fibromyalgia Association Launches 'Facing Fibromyalgia ...

ORANGE, Calif., Aug. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- The National Fibromyalgia Association (NFA) today announced the launch of a new national educational campaign aimed at increasing understanding of fibromyalgia among patients, healthcare providers and the public. Fibromyalgia is the most common widespread, chronic pain condition in the United States, characterized by a unique kind of persistent pain and usually accompanied by poor sleep, stiffness and fatigue. The campaign was driven in part by the results of two new fibromyalgia surveys -- one of the general public and one of physicians -- underscoring the need for greater awareness of the debilitating condition.

The multi-faceted campaign includes patient education materials, resources and tools, answering the call from more than eight in 10 physicians surveyed (82%) who agree there is a need for more patient-oriented information on fibromyalgia.
