Follow The Money

ORINDA, Calif. -- Nancy, a 23-year-old married graduate student, was well-dressed, quite pretty, and meticulously groomed.

During the first 40 minutes of her initial therapy session, she had talked about feeling anxious, depressed, sleepless, and generally cranky for no apparent cause.

Suddenly she blurted out, "Then there is this problem with my hair." She tore off her beret and bent her head forward so that her chin was pressed against her chest. There before me was a bald spot over more than a third of her head.

"I pull it out one strand at a time. It's a nervous habit. I can stop it when I think about it. But then I watch tv or start reading a book, and I start all over again. It drives my husband crazy. He is sick and tired of shouting at me to stop. When he hollers, I stop doing it at least for a while...

PLM wants to be top tourism school

Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim expressed hope that the city government can regain jurisdiction over Intramuros from the national government.

Intramuros, if properly restored to its former beauty, can be one of the countrys best tourist attractions. Once the administration of Intramuros is brought back to the city government, we can start doing some development projects there, Lim said.

Regaining Intramuros from the national government also figures in the expansion plans of the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila.

The Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila (PLM), the countrys premier locally-funded university, is better known for its accountancy, engineering, medicine, nursing, and physical therapy programs as its students have performed well in the said areas in government-administered licensure examinations.

Thyroid Disease 101: Ten Facts Doctors Forget To Tell Patients

January marks Thyroid Awareness Month. With some experts estimating that as many as 59 million Americans suffer from thyroid conditions -- including Hashimoto's Disease, Graves' disease, hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, thyroid nodules, thyroid cancer -- it's crucial for patients and doctors to learn more about these common -- but frequently overlooked -- hormonal health problems.

According to thyroid patient advocate and author Mary Shomon, many doctors simply don't communicate with their patients about thyroid risks, symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment.

Says Shomon: "It's alarming -- millions of people are suffering from thyroid conditions, but they are not getting properly diagnosed and treated. I don't know whether the problem is a lack of knowledge on the part of doctors, or HMOs and insurance companies trying to curtail costs.

Love: Arousiag “Alyce” Keshishian & Gregory Krikor Vartanian

Nov. 24 at St. Gregory the Illuminator Armenian Apostolic Church in Philadelphia. Father Nerses Manoogian officiated and a reception for 118 followed at the Drexelbrook in Drexel Hill.

They met

In August 2006. Alyce, 38, and Greg, 36, told everyone they met through their friend Kathy - kind of true, as it was Kathy who suggested that Alyce try an Armenian dating Web site. But the couple soon discovered they could have met in a more old-fashioned way, as their families have bumped into each other for decades: Alyce was born in Beirut, Lebanon, and a kind neighbor who was helping her young parents was the first to bathe the baby. Turns out this neighbor was Gregory's great-aunt Ankine. Alyce's cousins live next door to Greg's cousins in Toronto.

Some Wood Floor Finishes Are A Likely Source Of PCB Exposure

A case study to be published in the online open access journal Environmental Health suggests that old wood floor finishes in some homes may be an overlooked source of exposure to the now banned environmental pollutants polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs).

PCBs are persistent organic pollutants identified worldwide as human blood and breast milk contaminants. They were widely used in industry as cooling and insulating fluids for electrical equipment as well as in construction and domestic products such as varnishes and caulks. PCBs were banned in the 1970s because of their high toxicity. PCBs are associated with thyroid toxicity, effects on immune, reproductive, nervous, and endocrine systems, and cancer effects including breast cancer. The research by the Silent Spring Institute shows that current exposure from old wood floor finishes may be even more significant for some people than their diet.
