A Rectum, a Finger, and a Lawsuit in New York

Some cases are medical. Some are legal. Some, unfortunately, end up being both. New York State's Supreme Court is poised to consider the double-sided case of Brian Persaud, a 38-year-old construction worker who has reportedly sued a New York hospital for performing a rectal exam that he says he didn't want.

After receiving a head injury, Persaud was taken to the emergency room at New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center, where ER docs conducted a work-up. The New York Times's blog City Room reports:

According to a lawsuit he later filed, Mr. Persaud was then told that he needed an immediate rectal examination to determine whether he had a spinal-cord injury. He adamantly objected to the procedure, he said, but was held down as he begged, "Please don't do that." As Mr.

Overdose deaths soaring

More than two years ago, Michelle Gilmore was a completely different person. She lied, conned and stole to feed an addiction to drugs, she said.

"It loved me. It was always there for me," she said, adding that in her lifetime she has used just about every kind of drug except heroin and ecstasy.

Living with acne

Drugstores offer a mind-boggling array of products and treatments that range from "The Power Pimple Peel" to the formidable sounding "Teminator 10," next to long-time standards such as Clearasil and Stridex. A stroll down most crowded malls will find a kiosk marketing Proactiv, the skin regimen touted by celebrities such as Jessica Simpson, Vanessa Williams and Sean "Diddy" Combs as an acne cure-all.

"The over-the-counter stuff isn't necessarily bad for mild acne," Ganz said. "Look for topical creams, products with salycic acid or benzoyl peroxide; that's what's in Proactiv, by the way," she said.

But you might want to see a dermatologist if the over- the-counter products don't work after two months, both Ganz and Lawley advise.

"If they're using these things regularly, and the (skin) is not responding after two months, it should be worth it to go to a dermatologist and start prescription treatments," Lawley said.

Giants' coach and Belichick on good terms

One evening last March during the NFL meetings in Phoenix, a group of folks leaving a restaurant encountered Tom Coughlin and Dick Jauron dining with their wives on the outdoor terrace.

Nothing unusual about that - Jauron, Buffalo's coach, was once Coughlin's defensive coordinator in Jacksonville.

Bill Belichick wasn't there. He doesn't spend much time at owners' meetings. But if he had been present, he might have been sitting with Coughlin and Jauron, among the few NFL coaches for whom the Patriots coach has any genuine affection. Add Cleveland's Romeo Crennel and you might have the entire list of peers Belichick truly likes.

That makes next Sunday's Super Bowl almost a love fest between two men perceived to be among the NFL's least lovable coaches: Belichick and Coughlin, portrayed by television cameras and sometimes his own New York Giants players as the ultimate grumpy old man.

The 2008 Forecast: Cloudy, With Intermittent Sun

Another new year is upon us and it begins with degrees of apprehension in various quarters. Sales in the residential housing market have slowed to a crawl, credit is tight, and home fuel and gas prices have shot up sharply in the last year, fueling rumbles about a possible national recession.
While that information has been tough to digest, there are other positive notes to consider, such as employment levels remaining steady. And even if the economy dips, the Corridor area enjoys what might be considered blanket protection due to the overwhelming presence of that ultimate corporate headquarters, the federal government - which will soon dump even more jobs into the region when the effects of the much anticipated Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) start shifting.
To gain keener insight, The Business Monthly asked business and government leaders in the Corridor and the state for their thoughts about 2008:

In a word, the first half of 2008 will be ...
